About

The FLASHPOINTS project consists of a series of videos created to illustrate responding to oppression, privilege, and exclusions in Higher Education. Each vignette features a faculty member responding to or initiating a challenging incident with a student/s. The vignettes are all open-ended, and do not present an optimum “solution"; rather, the vignettes are designed to promote a discussion about the role and responsibility of faculty/leaders in creating and maintaining classroom learning environments which are inclusive and anti-oppressive. The topics covered by these vignettes include:

  1. Misgendering
  2. Disability accommodations
  3. Land acknowledgments
  4. Spring Break (class issues)
  5. Controversial topics [Israel/Palestine]
  6. Trigger Warnings (content warnings)
  7. Immigration
  8. Women in Science

For each vignette, a Discussion Guide with lesson plans and additional resources are included in the Description.

In addition to these topics, there are five vignettes from a previous project which can be located in the "And Nobody Said Anything" series. There are also four filmed Faculty Interviews in which faculty discuss their challenges and strategies for dealing with critical classroom moments regarding diversity and oppression.

A detailed discussion and history of the FLASHPOINTS project can be found found in the
