Description/Abstract

Lack of sanitation is an ongoing concern in many areas of the world, including Peru. Inadequate sanitation has a detrimental impact on people's health, and quality of life. In particular, poor sanitation can spread diseases such as cholera, dengue fever as well as typhoid. This problem is more pronounced in rural areas. To solve this, SENCICO (a Peruvian public company) proposed a technology named Bason which has been implemented successfully in many flood-prone locations. After five years of monitoring, the prototype has been used by local families in their daily lives and has no unpleasant odors or insect problems. Results show that this technology is suitable for these and, potentially, other rural areas.
