Description/Abstract
This research aims to revisit the significant differences between non-elites and elites (dominant), as discussed by Indian historian Ranajit Guha. Guha uses the concept of "subaltern," derived from Antonio Gramsci, to refer to the same idea as non-elites (Guha, 1983). For him, both terms share the same meaning of representing marginalized or oppressed groups, inferior to the elites, with no access to equal opportunities in society. However, contrary to Guha's interpretation, this study argues that, while non-elites may exhibit diverse responses to crises, it is no longer accurate to view them all as “real subalterns”, as far as the real responses of subalterns are concerned. Further, the research would demonstrate that the response of subaltern groups to crises necessarily differ from those of the broader non-elite group of society.
