Abstract

This thesis paper explores how European ceramic art has been influenced by Eastern Asia and the Islamic world, particularly since the rise of colonialism in the 19th century, and how this phenomenon is interpreted through Orientalism, a critical theory pioneered by Edward Said. This study approaches this topic from three perspectives. To begin with, it conducts a comparative analysis of European ceramic art before and after the 19th century to analyze how Europe became the authoritative interpreter of Eastern culture during this period. During this process, originality and authenticity became secondary, while replication and appropriation were the mainstream. Additionally, the paper discusses the impact of this phenomenon on subsequent literary and artistic creations, as well as the ways contemporary art responds to this phenomenon. Finally, as an artist, the author analyzes how her creative work addresses the tension between originality and replication in the ceramic world and responds to the misinterpretations of Chinese ceramic folklore under Western narratives.
