Abstract

This thesis investigates the middle voice in Azerbaijani with a broader goal to contribute to studies of grammatical voice in Turkic languages from a theoretical perspective. An attempt is made to present a comprehensive description of the voice alternations in Azerbaijani. This detailed empirical study then serves as a basis for accounting for the syntactic, morphological, semantic and pragmatic factors which condition the behaviour of the Azerbaijani middle voice. Some impersonal constructions in Azerbaijani are also examined in order to shed light on the connection between impersonals and middle constructions. The discussion of impersonals revolves around the comparative analysis of Azerbaijani and Turkish impersonals since such an analysis makes it possible to chart the territory that the middle voice occupies in Turkic languages. Keywords: middle voice, anticausative, dispositional middle, passive, impersonal, reflexive, Azerbaijani, Turkish.
