Description/Abstract
This peer-reviewed paper appeared in Children and Libraries and explored the effects of extrinsic rewards on young participants (entering sixth through ninth grade) in public library summer reading programs in two library systems in different states. Twenty-two of sixty total participants volunteered to be interviewed, and twenty-four parents of those sixty participants volunteered to participate in an online survey. Additionally, 292 public librarians who directed summer reading programs in urban, suburban, and rural libraries nationwide volunteered to take part in an online survey that sought their perspectives on how incentives were used in their summer reading programs. Results and recommendations for best practice are discussed.
