Abstract
Project Concept
Flavorly.com is an online food magazine that aims to cover culinary topics relevant to Syracuse and the surrounding Central New York regions. It also reports on national food news that is of interest to locals. By nature, an online magazine is a living project which is constantly changing. While a large part of the project was reporting, writing, and editing stories fit for the magazine, a large challenge was simply keeping articles consistent and current.
Context of the Work
In the landscape of journalism today, the web provides an extension of print magazines. It offers more real estate to share videos, photo galleries, and additional content with readers on a steady basis, rather than merely once per month. Transitioning to online journalism encourages writers and editors to interact with their readers and stimulate interest and conversations.
A large part of web journalism now lies beyond print extension; many magazines exist solely online. It is a cheaper way to produce content and while it lacks the relaxing experience of reading a print magazine, it offers other advantages. Flavorly lives and grows exclusively on the web, providing readers with an interactive opportunity to discover the Central New York culinary scene.
Medium/Processes Used
Flavorly runs on Weebly, a content management system that allows recreational bloggers to create a professional website. Although the platform has many limitations, it has provided a generous learning experience. Five days per week, Flavorly digs up new content, which is extensively researched and edited.
Conclusion
As media constantly evolves, magazines must find ways to adapt and innovate. Staying ahead of trends will ensure the vitality of the industry, and Flavorly, with strong journalism and various forms of interactive multimedia, does just that.
