Abstract

PTSD, depression and alcohol misuse are all very prominent issues for active duty personnel and veterans. In this experiment, I examined how a family’s support can help either make these symptoms and behaviors worse or better depending if they display average or poor support. My hypothesis was that if a veteran has a strong support system, their PTSD, alcohol misuse/ AUD and depression symptoms will be lower when first assessed and decrease as time goes on compared to veterans who have poor support. I looked at three types of family support: support from family outside the home, inside the home and as a parent if the veterans had children. I then ran secondary analysis on data that had already existed from another study. By using independent sample t-tests, I discovered that while each family support type did have effects on PTSD, depression and alcohol misuse, support from family inside the home had effects on all three. My results did not support my hypothesis to the degree I expected, however it can be concluded that poor family support does affect a veteran’s alcohol misuse, PTSD and depression symptoms overtime.
