Abstract
There is a lack of studies examining the role of provider (e.g. primary care physician) communication in parent perceptions of and treatment decision-making for common childhoodonset mental health disorders, especially attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This mixed-methods study focused on the role of parent: pediatrician communication about ADHD before a child’s evaluation at a specialty ADHD clinic. Specifically, this study aimed to 1) develop a deeper understanding of parents’ initial experiences with their child’s inattentive, hyperactive and impulsive symptoms and attitudes about their child’s possible ADHD diagnosis, 2) evaluate how parents' relationships with pediatricians are related to their understanding of ADHD and 3) evaluate factors that influence parent’s perceptions of ADHD and its treatments with a specific focus on evidence-based treatment and non-evidence-based treatment (e.g., CAM). This research question was chosen not only because no one to our knowledge has studied this before. Additionally, most pediatricians prefer children be evaluated for ADHD by a specialty provider. Thus, this topic is both innovative and holds promise for being clinically significant.
