Abstract

Adding to the discussion of Nitration of aromatic systems, this thesis examines the reaction mechanism(s) and nitrating species responsible for the ortho effect (the formation of large amounts of ortho-nitro product in certain substituted benzenes by the action of nitric acid/acetic anhydride).
