As graduate students prepare to enter the job market, many are expected to craft an ‘online identity’ to aid in the process. But for some, this task can seem daunting. This panel will provide an overview of resources Syracuse Library presently offers to graduate students, as well as a broader discussion on integrating the many aspects of our online identities into a coherent, scholarly presence. Topics will include an overview of SU’s SUrface database, as well as professional and scholarly sites like LinkedIn, Academia.edu, and more popular sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Publication Innovation: Sustaining Digital Repositories for Science

Open Access repositories reduce restrictions for people trying to obtain the latest research discoveries across the sciences. How are these resources sustainable solutions to problems in science communication? Come hear answers to the sustainability problem from a leading figure helping develop and sustain arXiv and Project Euclid, two innovative repositories that have changed the way scientists access the products of research in Physics, Mathematics, and other disciplines.

Dr. Oya Rieger, associate university librarian at Cornell University Library, will speak about her extensive experience working on digital repository projects, including applying publishing models and technology that better supports the communication needs of scientists working in networked and computer-enabled environments. Yuan Li, the new librarian in charge of SUrface, Syracuse's digital repository for scholarship, will also contribute plans for the resource's development.

Dr. Rieger is a member of the arXiv Sustainability Advisory Group and oversees the library's digitization and e-scholarship initiatives. She is the author of several publications, as well as editor and contributor to the award-winning book, "Moving Theory into Practice: Digital Imaging for Libraries and Archives." Dr. Rieger's latest publication is "Assessing the Value of Open Access Information Systems: Making a Case for Community-Based Sustainability Models" in the Journal of Library Administration.
